Muhimpundu Carine is a 22-year-old woman with deafblindness living in Rwanda. She has often felt lonely and isolated, having difficulty communicating and forming relationships with others.
When she joined the ROPDB organisation, her life took a turn. Through them, she has had the opportunity to learn tactile sign language, among other things, which has enabled her to make herself understood to people around her. Today she feels more independent and included by society.
This change is important because it gave me back my dignity and enabled me to live with confidence and purpose. Before, I was isolated and felt forgotten by society. Now I know my rights, I can express myself and I am part of a community that understands and supports me," says Muhimpundu.
Muhimpundu also emphasises how important it has been for her to meet other people with deafblindness, as it has given her a support network and made her feel less alone. Today, she is an active member of ROPDB and works to increase knowledge about deafblindness by sharing her experiences. Through her involvement, Muhimpundu has inspired other people with deafblindness to dare to step forward and get help and support in demanding their rights.
