Uncertain future without information grants

The government's scrapped support for information activities in Sweden is hitting MyRight hard.

The government cuts the so-called information grant so sharply that all information grants to Swedish civil society organizations disappear. This means that all support for MyRight's information and educational work in Sweden will disappear.

- We expected cuts, but not to this extent, says Mia Munkhammar, communications manager at MyRight.

The information grant is money that Swedish aid organizations can apply for information work in Sweden. MyRight has previously received SEK 1 million per year to spread information about the situation of people with disabilities in the world and about the work of the partner organisations. The work has included increasing the knowledge of functional rights among those active in the aid industry and driving public opinion for an increased impact of functional rights in Swedish aid.

As of January 1, 2023, the grant for MyRights and other organizations' information work is SEK 0. The dwindling information grant means that all knowledge-raising, information-disseminating and review work is without funding for an indefinite period of time. When MyRight can no longer monitor and stay on top of the issue, there is an imminent risk that questions about the inclusion of people with disabilities will be forgotten. And Sida's statistics show gloomy figures and a great need to lift functional rights. In 2022, only 0.25 percent of Sida's aid efforts had disability as the main purpose.

- Our information grant has gone to convey the voices of people with disabilities around the world who live in vulnerability and find it difficult to make their voices heard. They are the ones affected by this cut, says Mia Munkhammar.

Note: MyRight's board and office are reviewing the possibilities of financing certain information activities with own funds for a limited period and are also investigating the possibilities of donors other than Sida. For the time being, many operations are on hold.
